The Ministry of Public Works has started work on the construction of a new breakwater in Kalba.
According to Al Ittihad, The National's Arabic sister publication, construction will be rolled out in several phases and will cost Dh200 million.
Helal Al Naqbi, president of the Municipal Council of Kalba City said: “Actual work on the project started two weeks ago, whereas the project previously went through the stages of field studies and engineering designs”.
He explained that the project comprises seven breakwaters, including a main breakwater that will cover a stretch of 720 metres, while the other six are to be 200 metres long.
The main breakwater will be located on the shore of the Khor Kalba area, which is the area that is most affected by storms.
