A graduate student from Washington state has been arrested in Pennsylvania and charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students six weeks ago, authorities said on Friday.
Pennsylvania State Police took 28-year-old Bryan Christopher Kohberger into custody on Thursday night on a fugitive warrant from Idaho, said James Fry, chief of police in Moscow, where the University of Idaho campus is located.
Mr Kohberger has been arraigned in Pennsylvania and was being held without bail pending a hearing on Tuesday to determine whether he would agree to or contest his extradition to Idaho, prosecutor Bill Thompson told reporters.
Mr Thompson said the suspect is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary in connection with the deaths of four undergraduate students — three women and a man — found killed on November 13 in the off-campus house they shared.
Mr Fry said the murder weapon has not been recovered, though police have found a car they had been searching for in connection with the killings.
Authorities said Mr Kohberger was a graduate student at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, about 15km from the victims' campus in the neighbouring panhandle of north-west Idaho. He was listed on his university's website as enrolled in the criminal justice and criminology department.
The murders unnerved the college town of Moscow, a community of about 25,000, as police worked to solve the crime over the last six weeks.
Asked at a press conference in Moscow whether authorities were seeking additional suspects, Mr Fry said: “We have an individual in custody who committed these horrible crimes, and I do believe our community is safe.”
He declined to offer a possible motive for the crime or to give any details about the investigation or how authorities located Mr Kohberger in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, about 140km north of Philadelphia, where he was arrested.

The UN General Assembly President in quotes:
YEMEN: “The developments we have seen are promising. We really hope that the parties are going to respect the agreed ceasefire. I think that the sense of really having the political will to have a peace process is vital. There is a little bit of hope and the role that the UN has played is very important.”
PALESTINE: “There is no easy fix. We need to find the political will and comply with the resolutions that we have agreed upon.”
OMAN: “It is a very important country in our system. They have a very important role to play in terms of the balance and peace process of that particular part of the world, in that their position is neutral. That is why it is very important to have a dialogue with the Omani authorities.”
REFORM OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL: “This is complicated and it requires time. It is dependent on the effort that members want to put into the process. It is a process that has been going on for 25 years. That process is slow but the issue is huge. I really hope we will see some progress during my tenure.”
