Members of a top-secret, bipartisan US congressional committee met on Tuesday to discuss the continuing challenges of the withdrawal from Afghanistan and urged President Joe Biden to reconsider the August 31 deadline.
Congressman Jason Crow, who attended the classified meeting, said that there is no logistical way to bring everyone out of the country by August 31.
“The end of this mission should come not based on a calendar date. It should come when we accomplish the mission,” Mr Crow told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell.
“There is broad and deep bipartisan support in Congress and across the country to extend the deadline and make sure we’re doing what is necessary to get everyone out.”
Taliban leaders have threatened dire “consequences” if the US extends the deadline set by Mr Biden.
“I am not concerned about what the Taliban thinks or what we should or shouldn’t do. We have an obligation to protect American citizens and we have a moral obligation to protect our partners and friends,” said Mr Crow.
“That’s not without risk, but if we’re not willing to use the US military to protect American citizens and our friends and allies, then what are we willing to use it for?”
In a press conference on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said an extension of the US presence is “a violation of the agreement” and suggested the group would not allow Afghans access to the airport beyond the deadline.
“We want them to evacuate all foreign nationals by August 31 and we are not in favour of allowing Afghans to leave,” Mr Mujahid said through an interpreter.
During a virtual meeting of G7 leaders, Mr Biden appeared unshakable even when pressured by European allies who called on him to extend evacuation efforts.
Mr Crow, who served as an army ranger in Afghanistan, said that history will not look kindly on Afghan leaders who fled the country.
“President Ghani left his country and his countrymen behind and I certainly think that history is going to be damning to him along with other senior [Afghan] leaders that got on private planes and left the country,” said Mr Crow.
Mr Ghani fled the country on Sunday, August 15, with a salwar kameez and a waistcoat and is reportedly now in the UAE.
In the last 24-hour period, an additional 21,600 people were taken out of Kabul, with 63,900 people relocated since the end of July and with commercials flights aiding the efforts, White House officials said.
On Tuesday, it was announced that Mr Crow and Republican representative Michael McCaul would hold a bipartisan press conference where they will call on Mr Biden to publicly commit to continue taking people out of Afghanistan until all Americans and all Special Immigrant Visa applicants have been safely relocated.

Ads on social media can 'normalise' drugs
A UK report on youth social media habits commissioned by advocacy group Volteface found a quarter of young people were exposed to illegal drug dealers on social media.
The poll of 2,006 people aged 16-24 assessed their exposure to drug dealers online in a nationally representative survey.
Of those admitting to seeing drugs for sale online, 56 per cent saw them advertised on Snapchat, 55 per cent on Instagram and 47 per cent on Facebook.
Cannabis was the drug most pushed by online dealers, with 63 per cent of survey respondents claiming to have seen adverts on social media for the drug, followed by cocaine (26 per cent) and MDMA/ecstasy, with 24 per cent of people.

It’ll be summer in the city as car show tries to move with the times
If 2008 was the year that rocked Detroit, 2019 will be when Motor City gives its annual car extravaganza a revamp that aims to move with the times.
A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.
The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.
In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.
The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.
Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.
Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.
“It's maddening,” said one such worker at Nissan's stand.
The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.
“It looks like there are a few less cars this year,” one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.
“I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.”
Tips to stay safe during hot weather
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can increase dehydration.
- Seek cool environments: Use air conditioning, fans, or visit community spaces with climate control.
- Limit outdoor activities: Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. If outside, seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Dress appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose and light-coloured clothing to facilitate heat loss.
- Check on vulnerable people: Regularly check in on elderly neighbours, young children and those with health conditions.
- Home adaptations: Use blinds or curtains to block sunlight, avoid using ovens or stoves, and ventilate living spaces during cooler hours.
- Recognise heat illness: Learn the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, nausea), and seek medical attention if symptoms occur.
