The UK's top places for green investment have been revealed.

Top of the list is Totnes in Devon, which has been moving from a life dependent on oil, to a town that uses locally generated renewable energy, produces its own food, and more.

Totnes was one of the first transition towns created in 2006.

Transition towns operate on the idea that waiting for governments to take action on issues like climate change means that communities may never see change.

The concept has now spread across the globe, with communities using it as a blueprint to become more sustainable.

However, individual efforts alone are not sufficient to make a difference. By acting collectively, on a wider scale, significant change can be achieved.

The research, which was carried out by Path Financial, found London has one of the highest proportion of residents in the UK investing in green pensions and investments.

Path’s findings show that one in every 82,569 people in London invested with Path, making it the one of the most sustainable cities in the UK when it comes to personal finance.

James Harrison, Chartered Financial Planner at Path, said: “I regularly meet clients based in London, and see a consistent thread – regardless of location or demographic – of individual’s wishing to ‘do more’ with their hard-earned assets – given London has an impressive amount of green space, this is not surprising.

“The Capital will clearly play a central role in our environmental ambitions, even if the government has introduced headwinds to these in the short term, and I do not anticipate appetite for a truly sustainable investment approach waning.”

The funds London residents are investing in mirror the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including businesses striving for gender equality, responsible consumption and production, and climate action.

Here are Path Financial’s top 12 towns with its highest number of green investors per capita:

1. Totnes, Devon – one in every 658 people

2. Forest Row, East Sussex – one in every 1294 people

3. Bath, Somerset – one in every 10,455 people
