A tweet about the government’s “cruel” asylum policy was “factually accurate”, TV sports presenter Gary Lineker has said.
Lineker told Alastair Campbell in an interview for Men’s Health UK magazine that he stood by his comments.
The BBC has launched an independent review of its social media guidance for freelancers after a dispute prompted by the Match of the Day presenter’s tweets.
Lineker was taken off air by the broadcaster after posting a tweet in which he said the language used by the government to promote its asylum plans was not dissimilar to that in 1930s Germany.
He later returned to his Match Of The Day presenting role after a boycott by other on-air figures.
“When I sent that tweet, it honestly never even crossed my mind that it would lead to where it went," Lineker said as part of Men’s Health UK’s Talking Heads series.
“I’ve worked with refugees’ charities for years. So, when I saw the Suella Braverman film, I said I thought it was pretty awful.
“Then the ‘stick to football’ people weighed in and I replied to one of them, just saying there was no massive influx. The UK takes far fewer refugees than other European countries.
"This is a cruel policy and the language used in the debate reminds us of the debate in Germany in the 1930s.
“I think that is factually accurate.”

Lineker said that when new social media guidance was introduced by director general Tim Davie in October 2020, he said that he would not stop “occasionally” tweeting about two issues — climate change and refugees.
“I wasn’t prepared to back down on that, especially as I felt and still feel that what I tweeted was fair and true,” he said.
“I wasn’t abusive. I wasn’t saying she [Ms Braverman] was a Nazi.
“I talked about the use of words like ‘invasion’ and ‘swarms’ and ‘criminals’ and ‘rapists’, which I think we should be very careful about because it has real-life consequences.”
Lineker said that after he was taken off air by the BBC he found it “hard to see how it got resolved unless they backed down”.
“And I think the key moment was when the other presenters and then the commentators made it clear they wouldn’t go on if I was taken off air,” he said.
“To be fair to Tim Davie, he admitted they had got it wrong and sorted it out.
“I love the BBC and I was very glad to be back on air and talking about football again.”
Campbell previously spoke to Lineker about the issue for his podcast with former Conservative MP Rory Stewart, The Rest is Politics: Leading, which is produced by Lineker’s Goalhanger Podcasts company.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

What is blockchain?
Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.
The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.
Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.
However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.
Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.
