Videos of Mitt Romney being heckled by supporters of President Donald Trump were widely shared on social media on Wednesday, highlighting diehard support for the 45th president even as he prepares to leave the White House.
Mr Romney, a Republican senator from Utah, was confronted by supporters of Mr Trump at the airport in Salt Lake City and later taunted on a flight to Washington.
Videos of both incidents went viral on social media.
The online ridicule underscores the strength of Mr Trump's base, even as Republicans suffered losses in a run-off vote in Georgia and as Congress looked set to certify president-elect Joe Biden's win on Wednesday.
In the first video, a woman approaches Mr Romney as he waits at the gate and asks him: "Why aren't you supporting President Trump?"
In a testy exchange, the woman suggests Mr Romney should help to overturn last year’s “fraudulent” election result, referring to Congress’s tallying of electoral college votes on Wednesday.
“You haven’t supported him and you didn’t support him in the election," the woman says.
"You were voted in as a conservative to represent the conservative constituents, period. You work for us.”
A man’s voice can be heard saying: “Trump is a juggernaut, your legacy means nothing.”
Mr Romney makes some attempts to explain his reasons, saying he supported some of Mr Trump’s policies but was following a “constitutional process” on the election, then walks away from the woman.
A second video shared on Twitter shows a large group of Mr Trump’s supporters on board the flight from Salt Lake City to Washington shouting at Mr Romney.
In the darkened cabin, passengers chant “traitor” at the senator and hold up their phones to record the scene.
One woman shouts, “Resign, Mitt” and says he is failing to represent Utah voters.
The videos were shared hundreds of thousands of times. Some social media users commented on Mr Romney’s willingness to engage with the woman who confronted him in the first clip.
The videos were circulating on Wednesday as politicians met in Washington to certify Joe Biden’s victory in November’s presidential election.
Several pro-Trump politicians have pledged to object to the certification, although this will only delay and not change the outcome.

Explainer: Tanween Design Programme
Non-profit arts studio Tashkeel launched this annual initiative with the intention of supporting budding designers in the UAE. This year, three talents were chosen from hundreds of applicants to be a part of the sixth creative development programme. These are architect Abdulla Al Mulla, interior designer Lana El Samman and graphic designer Yara Habib.
The trio have been guided by experts from the industry over the course of nine months, as they developed their own products that merge their unique styles with traditional elements of Emirati design. This includes laboratory sessions, experimental and collaborative practice, investigation of new business models and evaluation.
It is led by British contemporary design project specialist Helen Voce and mentor Kevin Badni, and offers participants access to experts from across the world, including the likes of UK designer Gareth Neal and multidisciplinary designer and entrepreneur, Sheikh Salem Al Qassimi.
The final pieces are being revealed in a worldwide limited-edition release on the first day of Downtown Designs at Dubai Design Week 2019. Tashkeel will be at stand E31 at the exhibition.
Lisa Ball-Lechgar, deputy director of Tashkeel, said: “The diversity and calibre of the applicants this year … is reflective of the dynamic change that the UAE art and design industry is witnessing, with young creators resolute in making their bold design ideas a reality.”
