Hours after Syrian president Bashar Al Assad called on US forces to leave the country and threatened to attack America's partner the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a senior US military commander warned that such an attack by the regime would be “a bad policy.”
Speaking at the Pentagon on Thursday, director of Joint Staff General Kenneth McKenzie gave no indication of US plans to leave Syria, and cautioned against attacking the SDF.
“Any interested party in Syria should understand that attacking US forces or our coalition partners will be a bad policy,” General McKenzie said.
In the past US air force has targeted Mr Assad or allied proxies, to defend its SDF partners and secure the deconfliction zone in key areas over Syria.
The US commander refused to put any timeline on US presence in the country- estimated at 2000 troops and mostly in East of Syria.
General McKenzie said the status quo around Tanf area- where Iran and pro-Assad forces clashed in the past- remains unchanged.
"We are there. Nothing has changed,” he said. "The maintenance of that deconfliction zone [with Russia] is important and we would view very gravely any actions that tended to change that."
The US General said he was pleased with the progress against ISIS and the job that the SDF is doing on east of Euphrates river.

"We are beginning to clear out the final pockets of ISIS,” he added.
Although a transition “to complete perfection” is not expected, the goal is to leave security elements at the local level, he explained.
General McKenzie expected ISIS to flee those areas or go underground. "If they stay, they're going to be killed unless they surrender" he said.
The US General comments follow Mr Assad's interview with Russia’s RT where he called the SDF as the “only problem in Syria”.
He said his regime “started now opening doors for negotiations” with them but “this is the first option. If not, we’re going to resort to ... liberating those areas by force. We don’t have any other options, with the Americans or without the Americans.”
The Syrian president added that “the Americans should leave, somehow they’re going to leave”.
Also on Thursday, the US Central Command released the latest numbers in the fight against ISIS. It said that the coalition “conducted a total of 29,358 strikes between August 2014 and end of April 2018".
It also said that during this period “at least 892 civilians have been unintentionally killed by Coalition strikes since the start of Operation Inherent Resolve”.

What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
A “medium-sized company” can either have staff of 51 to 200 employees or 101 to 250 employees, and a turnover less than or equal to Dh200m or Dh250m, again depending on whether the business is in the trading, manufacturing or services sectors.
What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”
