Lafayette Square, the public park facing the White House, reopened on Monday about a year after federal authorities fenced off the area at the height of nationwide protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The square, which offers perhaps the best view of the White House to the public, was closed after US Park Police officers last June forcefully dispersed protesters near the White House.
The protesters were ejected from the square shortly before Donald Trump, US president at the time, walked across the park to stand near a church to pose before cameras holding a Bible.
The church was damaged the night before Mr Trump’s photo-op, when a fire was set in the basement of the building during protests.
Fencing still surrounds the square named after an American Revolutionary War hero, but entrances on the northern side of the park were opened to the public on Monday morning.
Lafayette Square has long been one of the nation’s most prominent venues for demonstrations.
Derek Chauvin, 45, the white Minneapolis police officer caught on video kneeling on the neck of Floyd for more than nine minutes, was convicted last month of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for the death of Floyd, who was black.
The Justice Department last week announced that Chauvin and three other former Minneapolis officers were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of breaching the civil rights of Floyd.

Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

What sanctions would be reimposed?
Under ‘snapback’, measures imposed on Iran by the UN Security Council in six resolutions would be restored, including:
- An arms embargo

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
