Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden is expected to roll out his pick for Vice President in the next 24 hours, following months of jockeying and speculation over the name of the woman that could potentially be the nominee in 2024 if the Democrats win in November.
According to the New York Times, Mr Biden's decision could be revealed as soon as today but many Democrats expect it to be on Wednesday. It follows months of vetting, virtual fundraisers and media appearances for more than 10 women candidates, culminating in interviews with the former Vice President in the week.
The process has been shrouded in secrecy and the Biden campaign has managed to keep a lid on meetings and interviews that the nominee has had with the candidates last week.
In March, Mr Biden announced his intent to pick a woman for the post and the campaign examined a list of Governors, Senators and Congresswomen since May.
But it is Senator Kamala Harris, former National Security Advisor Susan Rice, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Governor Gretchen Whitmer that have had one-on-one meetings with Mr Biden on August 2, the New York Times reported.
In the aftermath of the George Floyd killing in May and the Black Lives Matter protests, it is most likely that Mr Biden would pick an African-American candidate for the position to heal the racial divide. That makes both Ms Harris and Ms Rice two favorites for the pick, with the Senator from California holding an edge as a national figure who ran her own campaign and has held elected office, a source in contact with the campaign told The National.
Who could be Joe Biden's running mate?
Mr Biden’s timing of the announcement is consistent with previous nominees who have historically scheduled it few days before their party’s convention.
The Democratic convention is slated to begin in Wisconsin on Monday and will be for the most part virtual due to the pandemic. Mr Biden himself will accept the nomination from a different location that has yet to be announced.
A schedule of the convention released on Tuesday has the party’s biggest stars headlining the event.
Those include former first lady Michelle Obama and progressive Senator Bernie Sanders on Monday; former second lady Jill Biden, former president Bill Clinton, and liberal firebrand Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez on Tuesday; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren and former president Barack Obama on Wednesday; Senators Tammy Duckworth, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris on Thursday ahead of Mr Biden’s acceptance speech. If Ms Harris or Ms Duckworth is the pick then the schedule would change.
The campaign also announced a new team to help the incoming Vice Presidential candidate. Those include Liz Allen, a former Biden spokesperson who will be the running mate’s communications director and Sheila Nix, who was former chief of staff for Biden to be a senior adviser. Karine Jean Pierre will be the chief of staff for the VP pick.
Traditionally an early indication is the secret service assigned to the running mate. Those would be dispatched to the potential VP house few hours before the decision and the nominee is expected to travel there for a meeting with their pick. But, due to the pandemic, it is unclear if the rollout will change this year.
Mr Biden continues to lead US President Donald Trump in national and key swing state polls 84 days ahead of the vote on November 3.

How to keep control of your emotions
If your investment decisions are being dictated by emotions such as fear, greed, hope, frustration and boredom, it is time for a rethink, Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, says.
Greed
Greedy investors trade beyond their means, open more positions than usual or hold on to positions too long to chase an even greater gain. “All too often, they incur a heavy loss and may even wipe out the profit already made.
Tip: Ignore the short-term hype, noise and froth and invest for the long-term plan, based on sound fundamentals.
Fear
The risk of making a loss can cloud decision-making. “This can cause you to close out a position too early, or miss out on a profit by being too afraid to open a trade,” he says.
Tip: Start with a plan, and stick to it. For added security, consider placing stops to reduce any losses and limits to lock in profits.
Hope
While all traders need hope to start trading, excessive optimism can backfire. Too many traders hold on to a losing trade because they believe that it will reverse its trend and become profitable.
Tip: Set realistic goals. Be happy with what you have earned, rather than frustrated by what you could have earned.
Frustration
Traders can get annoyed when the markets have behaved in unexpected ways and generates losses or fails to deliver anticipated gains.
Tip: Accept in advance that asset price movements are completely unpredictable and you will suffer losses at some point. These can be managed, say, by attaching stops and limits to your trades.
Boredom
Too many investors buy and sell because they want something to do. They are trading as entertainment, rather than in the hope of making money. As well as making bad decisions, the extra dealing charges eat into returns.

How to get exposure to gold
Although you can buy gold easily on the Dubai markets, the problem with buying physical bars, coins or jewellery is that you then have storage, security and insurance issues.
A far easier option is to invest in a low-cost exchange traded fund (ETF) that invests in the precious metal instead, for example, ETFS Physical Gold (PHAU) and iShares Physical Gold (SGLN) both track physical gold. The VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF invests directly in mining companies.
Alternatively, BlackRock Gold & General seeks to achieve long-term capital growth primarily through an actively managed portfolio of gold mining, commodity and precious-metal related shares. Its largest portfolio holdings include gold miners Newcrest Mining, Barrick Gold Corp, Agnico Eagle Mines and the NewMont Goldcorp.
Brave investors could take on the added risk of buying individual gold mining stocks, many of which have performed wonderfully well lately.
London-listed Centamin is up more than 70 per cent in just three months, although in a sign of its volatility, it is down 5 per cent on two years ago. Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].

Band Aid
