Coronavirus: US cases pass 3,600 as first vaccine trial takes place

The fast-spreading Covid-19 outbreak continued to cast a long shadow over the US on Monday as the number of confirmed cases passed 3,600 and the death toll reached 69.

US data trackers, including Johns Hopkins and The New York Times, showed the coronavirus spreading across all American states with the exception of West Virginia.

The highest number of cases has been recorded in New York, with 732 confirmed, followed by Washington state with 636, while Alaska, North Dakota and Virgin Islands recorded one case each.

The markets took a big hit on Monday, with the Dow plunging 2,000 points despite the Federal Reserve cutting interest rates to zero the day before.

Across the US, schools, restaurants and bars were ordered to close in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco and Seattle.

In Washington DC, nightclubs were ordered to close, and restrictions were put on bars and restaurant seating.

Disneyland and Disney World closed and the Vegas casino strip was also starting to shut down, after the Centres of Disease Control recommended that gatherings of 50 people or more should not take place for two months.

Meanwhile, a cyber-attack was reportedly launched on the US government health agency in charge of responding to Covid-19.

The Health and Human Services Department “suffered a cyber-attack on its computer system Sunday night”, Bloomberg reported on Monday night.

No data appears to have been stolen but the attack “intended to slow the agency’s systems down” and was able to spread disinformation alleging a “national lockdown”.

The National Security Council sent out a tweet on Sunday warning of the fake rumours.

Also on Monday, US President Donald Trump’s resort in Florida, Mar-a-Lago, was undergoing a “deep clean” and closing for the day, CNN reported.

Three people with Mr Trump at Mar-a-Lago two weekends ago have tested positive for the virus.

Vaccine testing under way

US health agencies continued to expedite their work on developing a vaccine, with the first clinical trial taking place in Seattle on Monday.

The National Institutes of Health is funding the trial, which is taking place at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle.

But it will take a year to 18 months to fully validate any potential vaccine.

“Testing will begin with 45 young, healthy volunteers with different doses of shots co-developed by NIH and Moderna,” it said.

The spreading of the virus was a major topic in the Democratic debate between Senator Bernie Sanders and former vice president Joe Biden on Sunday night.

The two candidates touched elbows instead of shaking hands and criticised the Trump administration’s response to the crisis.

A Quinnipiac poll released on Monday gave Mr Biden a double-digit lead over Mr Trump as far as the crisis was concerned.

Common OCD symptoms and how they manifest

Checking: the obsession or thoughts focus on some harm coming from things not being as they should, which usually centre around the theme of safety. For example, the obsession is “the building will burn down”, therefore the compulsion is checking that the oven is switched off.

Contamination: the obsession is focused on the presence of germs, dirt or harmful bacteria and how this will impact the person and/or their loved ones. For example, the obsession is “the floor is dirty; me and my family will get sick and die”, the compulsion is repetitive cleaning.

Orderliness: the obsession is a fear of sitting with uncomfortable feelings, or to prevent harm coming to oneself or others. Objectively there appears to be no logical link between the obsession and compulsion. For example,” I won’t feel right if the jars aren’t lined up” or “harm will come to my family if I don’t line up all the jars”, so the compulsion is therefore lining up the jars.

Intrusive thoughts: the intrusive thought is usually highly distressing and repetitive. Common examples may include thoughts of perpetrating violence towards others, harming others, or questions over one’s character or deeds, usually in conflict with the person’s true values. An example would be: “I think I might hurt my family”, which in turn leads to the compulsion of avoiding social gatherings.

Hoarding: the intrusive thought is the overvaluing of objects or possessions, while the compulsion is stashing or hoarding these items and refusing to let them go. For example, “this newspaper may come in useful one day”, therefore, the compulsion is hoarding newspapers instead of discarding them the next day.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.

A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.

Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.

The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.

When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

Low turnout
Two months before the first round on April 10, the appetite of voters for the election is low.

Mathieu Gallard, account manager with Ipsos, which conducted the most recent poll, said current forecasts suggested only two-thirds were "very likely" to vote in the first round, compared with a 78 per cent turnout in the 2017 presidential elections.

"It depends on how interesting the campaign is on their main concerns," he told The National. "Just now, it's hard to say who, between Macron and the candidates of the right, would be most affected by a low turnout."
