US President Joe Biden strongly defended Israel on Friday after the announcement of a ceasefire with Hamas and said there will not be peace until the region acknowledges Israel’s right to exist.
At the same time, Mr Biden said the US will help provide security in the West Bank and that he plans to put together “a major package” to help rebuild homes in the Gaza Strip. He also called for a “two-state solution".
“There is no shift in my commitment to the security of Israel. Period,” Mr Biden said Friday during a joint news conference at the White House with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
“Let’s get something straight here: Until the region says, unequivocally, that they acknowledged the right of Israel to exist as an independent Jewish state, there will be no peace.”
Mr Biden praised the truce between Israel and Hamas after the 11-day clash left more 200 people dead. The fighting, which resulted in heavy Palestinian casualties in the Gaza Strip, controlled by Hamas, led some Democrats to pressure Mr Biden to take a harder line against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government.
The president, however, credited what he called his administration’s “quiet” diplomacy in helping bring an end to the rocket attacks by Hamas on Israel and Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
Administration officials held about 80 calls with counterparts in the Middle East, according to the White House, including six calls between Mr Biden and Mr Netanyahu as well as talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
It was Egypt that helped forged the ceasefire.
In a signal to Democrats who wanted to halt weapons sales to Israel, Mr Biden said he was willing to help "replenish" the Iron Dome missile defence system Israel deployed to stop the Hamas rockets, which were fired deep into Israeli territory.
The conflict was the fourth since Hamas took control of Gaza in 2007 and the most damaging. Efforts to end the hostilities intensified after the US raised pressure on Israel on Wednesday.
Both Israel and Hamas have claimed victory.

Tax authority targets shisha levy evasion
The Federal Tax Authority will track shisha imports with electronic markers to protect customers and ensure levies have been paid.
Khalid Ali Al Bustani, director of the tax authority, on Sunday said the move is to "prevent tax evasion and support the authority’s tax collection efforts".
The scheme’s first phase, which came into effect on 1st January, 2019, covers all types of imported and domestically produced and distributed cigarettes. As of May 1, importing any type of cigarettes without the digital marks will be prohibited.
He said the latest phase will see imported and locally produced shisha tobacco tracked by the final quarter of this year.
"The FTA also maintains ongoing communication with concerned companies, to help them adapt their systems to meet our requirements and coordinate between all parties involved," he said.
As with cigarettes, shisha was hit with a 100 per cent tax in October 2017, though manufacturers and cafes absorbed some of the costs to prevent prices doubling.
Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites
The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.
It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.
“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.
The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Other ways to buy used products in the UAE
UAE insurance firm Al Wathba National Insurance Company (AWNIC) last year launched an e-commerce website with a facility enabling users to buy car wrecks.
