President-elect Joe Biden shared his thoughts on Wednesday’s events in Washington, DC, stating it was “one of the darkest days in the history of our nation.”
Mr Biden discussed the violence at the Capitol before a scheduled announcement of his Justice Department nominees on Thursday afternoon.
“Yesterday, in my view, was one of the darkest days in the history of our nation, an unprecedented assault on our democracy,” he said from a closed theatre that his presidential transition team has been using in Wilmington, Delaware.
Hundreds of pro-Trump supporters gathered for a speech by President Donald Trump outside the White House on the same day Congress met to formally certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.
At the gathering, Mr Trump repeated unsubstantiated claims of how the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from him and his supporters and he encouraged them to march down to the Capitol.
“In the past four years, we’ve had a president who’s made his contempt for our democracy, our constitution, the rule of law clear in everything he has done,” Mr Biden said.
"He unleashed an all-out assault on the institutions of our democracy from the outset and yesterday was but the culmination of that unrelenting attack.”
Many Trump rallygoers, many armed, walked to Capitol Hill and then stormed the legislative building, leading to extensive damage and four deaths. The House and Senate had to pause the election certification and be escorted out of the building.
"It was not dissent, it was not disorder," Mr Biden said. "It was not protest. Don't call them protesters. They were a riotous mob, insurrectionists, domestic terrorists."
Current acting US attorney general Jeffrey Rosen vowed he would identify people involved in the Capitol violence and present federal charges.
There was widespread criticism over how police handled the attacks, with many making comparisons to how the city approached Black Lives Matter demonstrations over the summer.
Comparisons of the two events highlighted the racial and political differences between the two groups and the respective responses of police.
“No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol,” Mr Biden said regarding the comparisons, agreeing they were fair to make.
Vice president-elect Kamala Harris added, “we witnessed two systems of justice when we saw one that let extremists storm the United States Capitol and another that released tear gas on peaceful protesters last summer.”

Barings Bank
Barings, one of Britain’s oldest investment banks, was
founded in 1762 and operated for 233 years before it went bust after a trading
scandal.
Barings Bank collapsed in February 1995 following colossal
losses caused by rogue trader Nick Lesson.
Leeson gambled more than $1 billion in speculative trades,
wiping out the venerable merchant bank’s cash reserves.
Navdeep Suri, India's Ambassador to the UAE
There has been a longstanding need from the Indian community to have a religious premises where they can practise their beliefs. Currently there is a very, very small temple in Bur Dubai and the community has outgrown this. So this will be a major temple and open to all denominations and a place should reflect India’s diversity.
It fits so well into the UAE’s own commitment to tolerance and pluralism and coming in the year of tolerance gives it that extra dimension.
What we will see on April 20 is the foundation ceremony and we expect a pretty broad cross section of the Indian community to be present, both from the UAE and abroad. The Hindu group that is building the temple will have their holiest leader attending – and we expect very senior representation from the leadership of the UAE.
When the designs were taken to the leadership, there were two clear options. There was a New Jersey model with a rectangular structure with the temple recessed inside so it was not too visible from the outside and another was the Neasden temple in London with the spires in its classical shape. And they said: look we said we wanted a temple so it should look like a temple. So this should be a classical style temple in all its glory.
It is beautifully located - 30 minutes outside of Abu Dhabi and barely 45 minutes to Dubai so it serves the needs of both communities.
This is going to be the big temple where I expect people to come from across the country at major festivals and occasions.
It is hugely important – it will take a couple of years to complete given the scale. It is going to be remarkable and will contribute something not just to the landscape in terms of visual architecture but also to the ethos. Here will be a real representation of UAE’s pluralism.
