Saudi Arabia's new crown prince on Sunday visited security forces injured during a shootout with a suicide bomber who blew himself up near the Grand Mosque in Mecca.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman, also the deputy prime minister and minister of defence, visited the men on the first day of Eid Al Fitr at a hospital in Mecca.
The security forces were injured when the bomber detonated his explosives after a shoot-out at a three-storey house in Ajyad Al Masafi on Friday, causing the building to collapse. Six foreign pilgrims and five members of the security forces were wounded, the interior ministry said.
Hundreds of thousands of worshippers had gathered for at the mosque for prayers on the last Friday of Ramadan.
The interior ministry earlier said it launched a raid around Jeddah, as well as two areas in Mecca itself, including the Ajyad Al Masafi neighbourhood near the Grand Mosque where the suicide bomber blew himself up. Five people were arrested, including a woman.
The crown prince, who was appointed by his father King Salman as heir to the kingdom last week, praised the injured men for their sacrifice and courage in protecting the Two Holy Mosques.
He was accompanied by minister of interior Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz and the commander of special emergency forces, Lt Gen Khalid bin Qarar Al Harbi.

How will Gen Alpha invest?
Mark Chahwan, co-founder and chief executive of robo-advisory firm Sarwa, forecasts that Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing in their teenage years and therefore benefit from compound interest.
“Technology and education should be the main drivers to make this happen, whether it’s investing in a few clicks or their schools/parents stepping up their personal finance education skills,” he adds.
Mr Chahwan says younger generations have a higher capacity to take on risk, but for some their appetite can be more cautious because they are investing for the first time. “Schools still do not teach personal finance and stock market investing, so a lot of the learning journey can feel daunting and intimidating,” he says.
He advises millennials to not always start with an aggressive portfolio even if they can afford to take risks. “We always advise to work your way up to your risk capacity, that way you experience volatility and get used to it. Given the higher risk capacity for the younger generations, stocks are a favourite,” says Mr Chahwan.
Highlighting the role technology has played in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he says: “They were often excluded, but with lower account minimums ... a customer with $1,000 [Dh3,672] in their account has their money working for them just as hard as the portfolio of a high get-worth individual.”

The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.
What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
