RAMALLAH // The United Nations will resume food distribution in the Gaza Strip today after suspending operations last week when its offices were invaded by protesters.
The UN Relief and Works Agency will reopen its doors because it has received assurances from "the relevant parties", Gaza's Hamas rulers, about the safety of its staff, its Gaza spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna said.
The agency's 20 food centres serve 800,000 people, nearly half the population of the Gaza Strip.
Dozens of Palestinians stormed the agency's Gaza City office on Thursday because of its decision to halt a US$40 million (Dh147m) cash handout programme relied on by more than 100,000 people.
The agency is trying to raise $68m from donors to cover the deficit that caused it to suspend the financial aid.

Microsoft’s ‘hacker-in-chief’ David Weston, creator of the tech company’s Windows Red Team, advises simple steps to help people avoid falling victim to cyber fraud:
1. Always get the latest operating system on your smartphone or desktop, as it will have the latest innovations. An outdated OS can erode away all investments made in securing your device or system.
2. After installing the latest OS version, keep it patched; this means repairing system vulnerabilities which are discovered after the infrastructure components are released in the market. The vast majority of attacks are based on out of date components – there are missing patches.

Cybercriminals are targeting money through compromising the users’ identity – his username and password. So, get on the next level of security using fingertips or facial recognition.
4. Move your personal as well as professional data to the cloud, which has advanced threat detection mechanisms and analytics to spot any attempt. Even if you are hit by some ransomware, the chances of restoring the stolen data are higher because everything is backed up.
5. Make the right hardware selection and always refresh it. We are in a time where a number of security improvement processes are reliant on new processors and chip sets that come with embedded security features. What is the definition of an SME?
SMEs in the UAE are defined by the number of employees, annual turnover and sector. For example, a “small company” in the services industry has six to 50 employees with a turnover of more than Dh2 million up to Dh20m, while in the manufacturing industry the requirements are 10 to 100 employees with a turnover of more than Dh3m up to Dh50m, according to Dubai SME, an agency of the Department of Economic Development.
