Turkey will not act on Interpol 'red notice' for Al Hashemi

BAGHDAD // A Turkish foreign ministry official said the country will not act on Interpol's "red notice" for the arrest of Tareq Al Hashemi, made at the request of Iraqi authorities yesterday.

Mr Al Hashemi, Iraq's Sunni vice president, fled Baghdad in December when the Shiite-led government accused him of running death squads.

He denies the accusations. The notice did not amount to an international arrest warrant, but was a call on member countries to help locate Mr Al Hashemi and bring him to justice.

He is thought to be in Istanbul.
