Saudi Arabia brings down Houthi missile fired at Jazan

Saudi Arabia's air defence intercepted a ballistic missile launched at Jazan province on Thursday by Houthi rebels in neighbouring Yemen.

Colonel Turki Al Malki, spokesman for the Saudi-led Arab Coalition fighting the rebels, said a residential area was hit by fragments of the intercepted missile but no injuries or damage were reported.

"Saudi Air Defence Forces monitored the launch of the ballistic missile by the Houthi militias from the Yemeni governorate of Saada in the direction of Jazan," he said.

Saudi air defences intercepted another missile attack on Jazan on Wednesday, as well as two others fired at the capital, Riyadh, and Najran province.

Meanwhile, Yemeni troops backed by the Arab Coalition seized more areas of Saada, the main rebel stronghold, on Thursday.

The media centre of the Yemeni Armed Forces quoted the commander of the Saada front, Brigadier Ubaid Al Athla, as saying that the army had taken control of the northern front of Kataf district after heavy fighting in which many rebels were killed.

He said the capture of Al Fara valley near the centre of Kataf was significant because the road there was used to supply rebel  fighters on several fronts, and would enable government forces to retake the Kataf district headquarters in coming days.
