British and Egyptian troops have begun a month-long military exercise called ‘AHMOSE’ as the two countries strengthen their counter terrorism cooperation. Some 165 British military personnel are expected to be involved following a ceremony on Tuesday at Mohamed Naguib base in Alexandria.
A British government statement said it sought to enhance defence cooperation with Egypt and and improve the “sharing of expertise in warfare scenarios”.
“Egypt and the UK face the shared enemy of terrorism, which is threatening the stability of the region and the world. We know that in order to defeat this threat we must work together and share best practice in realistic scenarios,” said British
Ambassador to Egypt Sir Geoffrey Adams.
“We are learning from each other and building on the strategic security relationship with Egypt, a strong partner and ally in the region,” said British Defence Attaché to Egypt Colonel Ed Sandry.
It comes a year after Britain and Egypt’s defence ministries signed a Memorandum of Understanding to undertake joint military exercises to bolster their counter terrorism cooperation.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
