Italy’s anti-migrant Interior Minister said on Wednesday that five nations agreed to take some of the rescued migrants waiting on an Italian coastguard ship.
The migrants were picked up on the Mediterranean Sea last week and put on the ship, which has spent days anchored off Sicily.
Matteo Salvini, Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, said he would let the 116 migrants off the vessel after Germany, Portugal, France, Luxembourg and Ireland agreed to take most of them.
Mr Salvini said some of the passengers would be hosted in the properties of Italian bishops.
“Problem resolved,” he wrote on Facebook.
The EU-brokered agreement ends the latest standoff in which Italy has refused to let in migrants rescued at sea. But another looms.
Mr Salvini tweeted that he would refuse admission to a German charity boat carrying 40 migrants rescued off Libya.
