German couple jailed for selling son to paedophiles on darknet

A German couple were convicted of forced prostitution and rape after they were caught selling their son to paedophiles on the darknet, in a case which shocked the country.

The boy's mother, 48-year-old Berrin Taha, was jailed for 12 years and six months by a court in southern Germany. The boy's father, 39-year-old Christian Lais, was sentenced to 12 years and ordered to remain in preventative custody on completion of his sentence.

The couple were found guilty of rape, aggravated sexual assault of children, forced prostitution, and distribution of child pornography.

Now 10 years old, the boy is living with foster parents.

The darknet is an area of the internet beyond the realms of normal search engines and has grown infamous for use by drug dealers, weapons traders and child pornographers.

The couple were part of a mass arrest last autumn in which eight people were caught. Several other men have been convicted in separate trials.
