A senior British minister has tested negative for Covid-19 after he wiped his face several times and appeared unwell while speaking in Parliament.

Alok Sharma, the Business Secretary, became ill in the House of Commons on Wednesday, where he mopped his brow several times while speaking.

Mr Sharma was isolating himself at home with fears that he had the virus.

He offered a "huge thanks" to those who have expressed their well wishes over the past 24 hours.

Before the results came in, Mr Sharma's case provoked anger from some MPs who said it was too early for the return to sittings in the House of Commons.

He has been in charge of plans for getting people back to work in the UK and questions could now be raised over the moves.

"Reckless doesn’t even begin to describe it," Lisa Nandy, the Labour Party’s foreign policy spokeswoman, said of the return of Parliament.

Scottish National Party MP Kirsty Blackman said: "It demonstrates just how ridiculous and irresponsible the Tory government's decision to end virtual participation in Parliament was.

"They must now rectify this serious mistake and reintroduce hybrid proceedings without delay."

Senior officials and ministers fell sick with Covid-19 in March and April, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who spent three nights in intensive care at a London hospital.

The government said members of Parliament should be setting an example by returning to the office as the UK gradually eases restrictions imposed to stem the outbreak.

Social distancing measures have been introduced.
