Boris Johnson welcomes agreement of UK and US policy on climate change and Iran

US and British policy on topics from climate change to Iran have converged with those of the US administration under President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday.

Mr Johnson said he had a “good relationship” with the White House despite Mr Biden describing him in 2019 as a physical and emotional clone of Donald Trump.

Mr Johnson said he had two good, long conversations focused on climate change as the US seeks to re-enter the Paris Agreement to tackle climate change, from which it was withdrawn by Mr Trump during his one-term presidency.

“I’m very delighted to have a good relationship with the White House, which is an important part of any UK prime minister’s mission,” he told the US CBS network.

Mr Johnson said there had been important developments in the past few weeks that had brought the two countries closer on topics including climate change, Nato and Iran.

Last week Mr Biden said he wanted to revive the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran but would not lift sanctions to get Tehran back to the negotiating table.

“I think some of the stuff we're now hearing from the new American administration and from the new White House is incredibly encouraging,” Mr Johnson said.

The UK is due to host a climate change conference in Glasgow, Scotland, in November to accelerate governments’ efforts to tackle global warming.
