Boris Johnson and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman have spoken on a call of the importance of “redoubling efforts” to tackle coronavirus and to ensure a sustainable global recovery, a Downing Street spokesperson has revealed.

The UK prime minister also thanked King Salman for Saudi Arabia's leadership of the G20 during a turbulent period.

Mr Johnson had last week commended Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for his stewardship of the economic forum, when he reiterated the importance of the UK's close trading relationship with the Kingdom.

Speaking on Tuesday to King Salman, Mr Johnson also “noted the Kingdom’s vital role in securing progress in the conflict in Yemen and the Middle East peace process,” Downing Street said.

The praise follows the UN's commendation of the Kingdom in late July for its efforts in mediating and pushing a power-sharing deal between Yemen's government and the secessionist Southern Transitional Council.

The WHO also recognised the effectiveness Kingdom's precautionary measures during this year's Hajj.

The next meeting of the G20 is set for November 15, a date that Mr Johnson and King Salman both “looked forward to”, according to the spokesperson.
