German chancellor Angela Merkel has insisted her health is fine despite being seen shaking in public for the third time in less than a month.
The 64-year-old, who is renowned for her work ethic, insisted she capable of doing her job and that “just as it happened one day, so it will disappear.”
Ms Merkel, chancellor since 2005, trembled as she watched a military ceremony welcoming the Finnish prime minister Antti Rinne. Her first shaking episode on June 18, where she met with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy and was blamed on dehydration, went away after she drank some water.
“I am fine. I have recently said that I am working through what happened during the military honours with President Zelenskiy, Ms Merkel told a press conference on Wednesday.
"This process is clearly not finished yet but there is progress and I must live with this for a while but I am very well and you don't need to worry about me," she added.
There have been suggestions the shaking is more of a psychological issue that she has desperately tried to stop since it emerged.
She was also seen trembling on June 27 but still later went ahead with a visit to Japan for the G20 summit. Ms Merkel then went straight into three days of talks in Brussels to decide on a new group of nominees for top European Union jobs.
She announced last year she would not seek re-election as chancellor in 2021 and stepped down as the leader of the Christian Democratic Union in 2018.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
