TEHRAN // A British-Iranian woman controversially jailed months ago in Tehran after trying to attend a men’s volleyball match was released on bail on Sunday pending an appeal court verdict.
The case of Ghoncheh Ghavami, a law graduate from London, has been surrounded by confusion since her lawyer said earlier this month that the 25-year-old had been sentenced to a year in prison for “spreading propaganda against the regime”.
That reported jail term has been denied by judicial authorities, but in a fresh twist Ms Ghavami’s mother Susan Moshtaghian said a judge had agreed to let her daughter leave jail on bail of 1 billion Iranian rials (Dh137,000).
“Right now, my daughter is freed until the Court of Appeal issues the final verdict,” she told the ISNA news agency, appearing to confirm the initial prison sentence.
Ms Moshtaghian said she was told about the one-year jail term and an additional two-year restriction on leaving Iran.
“We hope she’ll be acquitted by the appeal court of the charges,” she said.
Ms Ghavami was arrested on June 20 outside Tehran’s Azadi Stadium, where she and others were demanding that women be allowed in to watch a volleyball match between Iran and Italy.
She was refused entry as women are not allowed to watch male athletes in the Islamic republic.
Officials have said that Ms Ghavami was arrested for security reasons unrelated to the sporting event.

Defining head lice
Pediculus humanus capitis are tiny wingless insects that feed on blood from the human scalp. The adult head louse is up to 3mm long, has six legs, and is tan to greyish-white in colour. The female lives up to four weeks and, once mature, can lay up to 10 eggs per day. These tiny nits firmly attach to the base of the hair shaft, get incubated by body heat and hatch in eight days or so.
Identifying lice
Lice can be identified by itching or a tickling sensation of something moving within the hair. One can confirm that a person has lice by looking closely through the hair and scalp for nits, nymphs or lice. Head lice are most frequently located behind the ears and near the neckline.
Treating lice at home
Head lice must be treated as soon as they are spotted. Start by checking everyone in the family for them, then follow these steps. Remove and wash all clothing and bedding with hot water. Apply medicine according to the label instructions. If some live lice are still found eight to 12 hours after treatment, but are moving more slowly than before, do not re-treat. Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair using a fine-toothed comb.
After the initial treatment, check for, comb and remove nits and lice from hair every two to three days. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes.Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay.
