The UK says it prizes its special relationship with the US and works more closely with it than other nations.
UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has emphasised the special relationship Britain enjoys with the US after meeting Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
"The way we see it is that for the past seven decades the alliance between the UK and the US, from trade to security co-operation, has helped to shape the world for the better," Mr Raab said on Wednesday.
"On defence, security and intelligence, our countries trust each other more deeply. We work together more closely than any others. We in the UK really prize that relationship.
"We value it enormously and we really appreciate, from the administration but also from the personal remarks you and the president made, that the friendship we have is something ... we look forward to nurturing in the weeks, months and years ahead."
The UK and US cemented their friendship when they announced on Monday that Britain was joining the Pentagon's naval mission in the Arabian Gulf.
"We had this Brexit issue preoccupying us in the UK," Mr Raab said. "This Government, this Cabinet, is absolutely resolved, determined to leave the EU at the end of October.
"We will stay good friends, good neighbours, with our European partners. But we are at the same time determined to seize the global opportunities beyond Europe for the UK.
"America is our single largest bilateral trading partner. President Trump has made clear again that he wants an ambitious free trade agreement with UK.
"So I hope we can make that happen as soon as possible after we leave the EU on October 31."
He said he and Mr Pompeo also discussed Afghanistan, Syria and the Strait of Hormuz.
"We are going to put a lot of hard work in on both sides to make further progress," Mr Raab said.
"I'm confident that we can take the UK-US relationship from strength to strength."

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.

TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US's most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out ballistic missiles as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 150 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then stationed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
