Young entrepreneurs set up stall in Abu Dhabi



ABU DHABI // Budding entrepreneurs have swapped lessons for the real world and are putting their business skills to the test in the capital.

About 200 pupils and students from schools and universities across Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region have set up about 100 stalls in Marina Mall for four days as part of the Young Entrepreneur Competition.

Organised by Dubai SME - the agency of the Department of Economic Development in Dubai, which develops the small and medium enterprise sector - the annual competition has been expanded to Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah for the first time this year.

The event gives 15 to 25-year-olds the chance to try out their entrepreneurial ideas in the real world.

Students began trading from 10am to 10pm in Marina Mall on Wednesday and will continue until the closing time tomorrow.

Emirati Saeed Al Hameli was manning a kiosk selling solar lights incorporated into traditional designs. "The competition is a good idea because it shows how students think and it gives them a chance to create things," said the 23-year-old Higher Colleges of Technology engineering student.

Mohamed Mahmoud, 22, also Emirati, was at a stall selling gifts for children and adults, with items including balloons, dolls, toys and watches. "It's a good experience because it helps me to be a businessman," said Mr Mahmoud, a UAE University student.

Nouf Al Kaabi, 17, a photographer, was putting her hobby to use by taking pictures of people, who could have the images altered using a graphics editing program before buying, if they wished. Nouf said she and a friend made Dh2,000 by yesterday morning since opening for business on Wednesday.

"What's special about the competition is that they are having real customers, not only their friends, so they understand the market," said Yousuf Lootah, communication team leader for the competition.

The contest is held under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and chairman of Dubai's Executive Council.

The event moves to Al Hamra Mall in Ras Al Khaimah from April 10 to 13 for entrants from Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, while those from Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman will be at Wafi in Dubai, from April 17 to 20. The winners will be honoured by Dubai SME.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple. 
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

How Apple's credit card works

The Apple Card looks different from a traditional credit card — there's no number on the front and the users' name is etched in metal. The card expands the company's digital Apple Pay services, marrying the physical card to a virtual one and integrating both with the iPhone. Its attributes include quick sign-up, elimination of most fees, strong security protections and cash back.

What does it cost?

Apple says there are no fees associated with the card. That means no late fee, no annual fee, no international fee and no over-the-limit fees. It also said it aims to have among the lowest interest rates in the industry. Users must have an iPhone to use the card, which comes at a cost. But they will earn cash back on their purchases — 3 per cent on Apple purchases, 2 per cent on those with the virtual card and 1 per cent with the physical card. Apple says it is the only card to provide those rewards in real time, so that cash earned can be used immediately.

What will the interest rate be?

The card doesn't come out until summer but Apple has said that as of March, the variable annual percentage rate on the card could be anywhere from 13.24 per cent to 24.24 per cent based on creditworthiness. That's in line with the rest of the market, according to analysts

What about security? 

The physical card has no numbers so purchases are made with the embedded chip and the digital version lives in your Apple Wallet on your phone, where it's protected by fingerprints or facial recognition. That means that even if someone steals your phone, they won't be able to use the card to buy things.

Is it easy to use?

Apple says users will be able to sign up for the card in the Wallet app on their iPhone and begin using it almost immediately. It also tracks spending on the phone in a more user-friendly format, eliminating some of the gibberish that fills a traditional credit card statement. Plus it includes some budgeting tools, such as tracking spending and providing estimates of how much interest could be charged on a purchase to help people make an informed decision.
