ABU DHABI// Damian Marley, the youngest son of the reggae legend Bob Marley, will perform in the UAE for the first time next month. Marley - who is also known as Junior Gong - and the Malian group Tinariwen were among seven acts confirmed yesterday by Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach) for the second Womad Abu Dhabi festival.
Marley and his backing musicians will headline the third and final night of the festival in Abu Dhabi. Tinariwen, a band of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara desert in Mali, will perform alongside Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe of the American band TV on the Radio. Tinariwen's distinctive music merges blues guitar rhythms with traditional instruments like the shepherd's flute. The mixing of styles and musicians is part of the vision of the festival, organisers said.
Abdulla al Ameri, the director of arts and culture for Adach, said: "It is a part of our strategy to improve the knowledge of audiences as well as local bands by hosting these sorts of collaborations. We also want to give the audience something different. This is a special festival and this fusion music can only be seen here at Womad." Mr al Ameri also said Adach will record all the live performances during the three-day festival and hopes to produce a CD.
"After the shows, the only way for anyone to see or hear the music will be through a CD or DVD," he said. "We are putting measures in place to make a recording and to produce a CD so that more people than just the audience on the day can enjoy it." The other acts confirmed for April 24, a Saturday, are Amparo Sánchez, a Spanish folk singer; Debashish Bhattacharya, one of the most famous Indian slide guitarists who was nominated for a Grammy award and won a BBC Award for World Music; a singer-songwriter from Cape Verde named Mayra Andrade; and Ilham al Madfai, an Iraqi musician who merges classical Arabic traditions with modern beats.
On April 23, Sierra Maestra, a band from Cuba, will perform. The line up for the Al Ain concert will be announced at a later date, Adach confirmed today. @Email:aseaman@thenational.ae

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Tailors and retailers miss out on back-to-school rush
Tailors and retailers across the city said it was an ominous start to what is usually a busy season for sales.
With many parents opting to continue home learning for their children, the usual rush to buy school uniforms was muted this year.
“So far we have taken about 70 to 80 orders for items like shirts and trousers,” said Vikram Attrai, manager at Stallion Bespoke Tailors in Dubai.
“Last year in the same period we had about 200 orders and lots of demand.
“We custom fit uniform pieces and use materials such as cotton, wool and cashmere.
“Depending on size, a white shirt with logo is priced at about Dh100 to Dh150 and shorts, trousers, skirts and dresses cost between Dh150 to Dh250 a piece.”
A spokesman for Threads, a uniform shop based in Times Square Centre Dubai, said customer footfall had slowed down dramatically over the past few months.
“Now parents have the option to keep children doing online learning they don’t need uniforms so it has quietened down.”
