ABU DHABI // The buzz and roar of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship will return to the capital next month for the opening round of the competition's 2010 calendar.
Now entering its sixth year as a Red Bull Air Race fixture, the capital's March 26-27 sky race was confirmed yesterday and will be the focal point in a weekend aviation festival.
With organisers determined to attract hundreds of thousands of spectators to the Corniche, special concerts, pilot meet-and-greets, aircraft displays and other family activities have been planned to complement the high-octane aerial shows.
"This battle for the skies is set against the enticing setting of the Corniche and is a superb event for the entire community to enjoy," said Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority.
The tourism authority's three-year deal to host the free-to-the-public race ends in 2011.
With 15 elite pilots regularly hitting speeds of up to 370 kph, Team Abu Dhabi's Hannes "Falcon" Arch, the 2008 world champion, and Britain's Paul Bonhomme will be the favourites.
Other rounds in the eight-part global series will take place in Australia, Canada, the US, Germany, Hungary, Portugal and an unconfirmed venue in South America.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
