ABU DHABI // Pupils will have the chance to see what it is like to take part in one of the world's most extreme sailing races.
Budding sailors will not only see what the crew go through in the nine-month around-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, but also get real experience in smaller boats.
The 90-minute school tours, developed by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, will run from 11am to 4pm over six days next month.
The initiative also aims to teach children the importance of protecting the oceans and the dangers of pollution.
Pupils will have a close look at Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's entry Azzam, which will be one of the six boats to dock in the capital as part of the race, which is over 39,000 nautical miles.
Classes will be shown a DVD on the race before their trips, and teachers will be given complete lesson plans for following the rest of the race when they register for the tours.
The lessons will incorporate geography and biology, including information about the environment and how to protect oceans and marine wildlife.
The Volvo Ocean Race Destination Village, next to Heritage Village on the Corniche Breakwater, will be open to the public from December 31 to January 14.

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.
