UAE’s Ramadan gift to Syrian refugees in Jordan

ABU DHABI // UAE volunteers are distributing aid to Syrian refugees in Jordan as part of a Ramadan campaign.

The UAE Red Crescent Authority’s campaign is handing out 2,026 food parcels to 1,432 Syrian refugee families in Mafraq, Jordan.

More than Dh70 million has already been spent by the authority on projects for Syrian refugees.

The projects include a “five-star” refugee camp, which shelters people in caravans rather than tents and will eventually house 25,000.

Another project built two schools, with a capacity of 2,000 students, and seven hospitals in Mrajeeb Al Fhood, also in Jordan. The authority also gives hot meals daily to the displaced.

Its most recent campaign follows Sheikh Zayed Humanitarian Work Day, held on Ramadan 19, the anniversary of the founding President Sheikh Zayed’s death.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, launched the day to commemorate Sheikh Zayed’s humanitarian legacy.

The authority’s campaign also runs in parallel with Sheikh Mohammed’s drive to clothe one million children, which surpassed its goal within 10 days.

The UN appealed for donations of Dh16.6 billion last month to meet the needs of Syrian refugees for the rest of the year.

The UAE pledged Dh1.1bn in aid at January’s International Donors Conference for Syria, in Kuwait.
