UAE food banks collect 2k tonnes of supplies over the last year for those on low incomes

More than 2,000 tons of food has been collected for the UAE Food Bank over the past year to support needy causes around the country.

Over the last 12 months, the project has distributed 80 fridges to the mosques of Dubai and 10 fridges each in Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah.

It also participated in the Dubai International Food Safety Conference through an awareness platform, in addition to honoring the most cooperative partners.

On World Food Day, the bank organized a competition on social networking sites to raise awareness on the importance of reducing food waste.

In conjunction with the event, meals were distributed in coordination with the food establishments, helping 8,000 workers.

“The 2018 Plan will focus on coordination with the other emirates to establish UAE Food Bank collection sites,” said Dawood Al Hajiri, Director General of Dubai Municipality and Vice Chairman of the Board.

“The focus will be on a range of projects that serve the bank's objectives, and it is important that initiatives outside the country be developed and assistance be provided to the affected countries.”

In coordination with Careem, a logistics company, the Bank will collect surplus food from individuals and deliver it to food bank fridges distributed in mosques in Dubai.

It will also be providing 1,500 snacks and 500 meals daily to RTA bus drivers and 700 meals per day for workers in labour accommodation, in coordination with Zabeel Palace.

The UAE Food Bank participated in the Gulfood Exhibition 2017-2018, with a food surplus from the exhibition donated in cooperation with Dubai World Trade Center, Tarahum Charity Foundation, Dar Al Ber Society and Lulu Hypermarket. Donations have helped 2,000 families.

During the first quarter of 2018, the total amount of foodstuffs received by UAE Food Bank reached 232 tonnes, and they distributed 1,000 meals every Friday to workers provided by Zabeel Palace.

In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000. The local average wage is £15,458.
