More Emiratis will have the chance to be one of the UAE’s first astronauts as the registration deadline for the UAE Astronaut Programnme has been extended to March 31.
The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre announced on Thursday that the extension is to allow more Emiratis to apply.
The extension will also provide the centre with more time to begin to process the large numbers of applications they have already received.
“Our call on Emiratis to submit their applications to join the UAE astronaut programme was very well-received across the UAE and we take pride in the interest Emirati men and women have shown in the field of space exploration,” said Salem Al Marri, assistant director general for scientific and technical affairs at centre.
“The extension provides us with the time we need to assess the applications accurately and we would like to encourage more candidates, especially doctors, professors and engineers, to take advantage of the extended deadline and participate in this historical journey for the UAE and the Arab world,” he said.
More than 3,000 Emiratis have applied to the programme. About one in four were Emirati women, six out of ten had a degree in science, mathematics, technology or engineering, while one in five was a qualified pilot, said Mr Al Marri during the World Government Summit in Dubai last month.
By the end of the year, the number of applicants will be narrowed down to an astronaut corps of four, who will begin training for missions to the International Space Station.

In April, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed announced the establishment of the UAE National Space Programme and the launch of the UAE Astronaut Programme, which plans to send the first Emirati astronaut to space and open the door for future explorations.
The intention is to have the first UAE astronaut in space by 2021, in time for the country’s 50th anniversary.

- Be professional and patient. Always be professional with whoever you are interacting with throughout your search process, this will be remembered. You need to be patient, dedicated and not give up on your search. Candidates need to make sure they are following up appropriately for roles they have applied.

School counsellors on mental well-being
Schools counsellors in Abu Dhabi have put a number of provisions in place to help support pupils returning to the classroom next week.
Many children will resume in-person lessons for the first time in 10 months and parents previously raised concerns about the long-term effects of distance learning.
Schools leaders and counsellors said extra support will be offered to anyone that needs it. Additionally, heads of years will be on hand to offer advice or coping mechanisms to ease any concerns.
“Anxiety this time round has really spiralled, more so than from the first lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic,” said Priya Mitchell, counsellor at The British School Al Khubairat in Abu Dhabi.
“Some have got used to being at home don’t want to go back, while others are desperate to get back.
“We have seen an increase in depressive symptoms, especially with older pupils, and self-harm is starting younger.
“It is worrying and has taught us how important it is that we prioritise mental well-being.”
Ms Mitchell said she was liaising more with heads of year so they can support and offer advice to pupils if the demand is there.
The school will also carry out mental well-being checks so they can pick up on any behavioural patterns and put interventions in place to help pupils.
At Raha International School, the well-being team has provided parents with assessment surveys to see how they can support students at home to transition back to school.
“They have created a Well-being Resource Bank that parents have access to on information on various domains of mental health for students and families,” a team member said.
“Our pastoral team have been working with students to help ease the transition and reduce anxiety that [pupils] may experience after some have been nearly a year off campus.
"Special secondary tutorial classes have also focused on preparing students for their return; going over new guidelines, expectations and daily schedules.”
