UAE airlines have cancelled flights to and from Hong Kong as the world’s strongest storm so far this year hurtles towards China.
Both Emirates and Etihad have cancelled flights for Sunday ahead of the arrival of category five Typhoon Mangkhut.
The category five storm killed at least 28 people as it tore through the Philippines, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Etihad has cancelled flight EY833 from Hong Kong to Abu Dhabi on Sunday and is watching the weather closely, according to a spokesperson for the airline.
Emirates has also cancelled EK387 from Hong Kong to Dubai and warned that flights to and from Cebu and Clark today and tomorrow might be affected.
Any customers booked on flights to or from Cebu, Clark or Hong Kong on September 16 or 17 can reschedule their flights for up to seven days later than originally planned, said the airline. Passengers must contact their travel agent or booking offices to make any changes.
A spokesperson for Etihad said that passengers are being assisted and will be rebooked on to the next available flights.
Almost 900 flights were cancelled today due to Typhoon Mangkhut, according to the Hong Kong Airport Authority.
Cathay Pacific Airways, which has experienced severe disruptions as a result of the storm, will not resume operations until 4am tomorrow.
Cathay Dragon and Hong Kong Airlines have also grounded their fleets today.
