Electric scooters will be riding back into Dubai next week as authorities begin a trial-run in five districts of the emirate as part of wider efforts to slash congestion levels.
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority has worked in tandem with Dubai Police to ensure a safe launch of the e-scooter scheme.
The project is supported by local companies Arnab and Skurrt and international operators Careem, Lime and Tier.
Where will the trials be taking place?
E-scooters will be on the move in the following areas:
•Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard
• Dubai Internet City
•2nd of December Street
•Al Rigga
•Jumeirah Lake Towers
Trial areas were chosen based on their population density, private developments, availability of public transport services, integrated infrastructure, and high traffic safety records.
Transport officials have not revealed how long the trials will last and what form they will take.
Sheikh Hamdan backs plans
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, was updated on plans for the trial by transport chiefs earlier this week.
"We were briefed on the e-scooter pilot project, which was launched as a partnership between two local companies and three global counterparts," said Sheikh Hamdan.
"It is our goal to introduce new public services in Dubai as part of enriching the city’s smart infrastructure."
The RTA said scooters could prove a viable solution to a global mission to provide efficient, eco-friendly modes of transport for short journey - particularly in cases where metro and other public transport are not available - referred to as the "first and last mile" challenge.
The widespread use of scooters across Dubai could help to cut traffic levels - and boost the environment.
Many first or last mile journeys involve commuters having to make a short trip to a bus or Metro station in order to travel to work.
In a country with all-year sunshine - and searing temperatures during the summer months - the climate can prove a deterrent to even short walks and lead to many getting behind the wheel to drive to the office instead.
Having the option of riding a scooter to a Metro station to get to work may allow many to leave cars at home altogether.
Safe return earmarked for scooters after Dubai ban
The Roads and Transport Authority outlawed the hire of electric scooters in the emirate in March 2019 while it investigated how the rental market could be regulated.
In a post on Facebook, one Dubai-based electric scooter company, KIWIride said the reckless behaviour of some riders had contributed to the decision.

TERMINAL HIGH ALTITUDE AREA DEFENCE (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US's most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was created in 2008.

THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out ballistic missiles as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".

To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.

THAAD can target projectiles inside and outside the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 150 kilometres above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.

In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then stationed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
