Tributes have been paid to two teenage brothers killed in a car crash in Abu Dhabi.
Twins Sultan and Majid Al Mazim,18, were driving back to their home in Sharjah on Sunday when their vehicle struck a lorry.
The two men were keen handball players and had aspirations to join the UAE’s military.
They had recently completed their national service and had applied to join Zayed Military College in the capital.
“They had graduated from high school, completed their national service and were yesterday chasing their dream of joining the military college,” their father, Major Abdullah Karam Al Mazim, said.
“We were told the accident happened at 3.30pm [and was] caused by the sudden swerving of the lorry’s driver.”
Maj Al Mazim said everybody who had known his sons had been won over by their charm and ambition.
Al Ahli Sports Club, where the pair played handball, paid tribute to the duo, as did the UAE Handball Federation and Sharjah Sports Club.
On Monday, the teenagers’ mother appealed to authorities to award her sons honorary military ranks.
“Yes, it was a dream for both of them to become officers,” said Maj Al Mazim.
“But it’s God’s will and I hope during these tough times that people will continue to pray for them.”
Abu Dhabi Police said the accident happened on Sweihan-Al Ain Road.
The siblings were buried in Sharjah cemetery on Monday in a funeral attended by close family members.
“The funeral was performed on a small scale and restricted to family members. We received condolences on the phone.” said Maj Al Mazim.
