Sharjah Airport has opened a Dh40 million extension that could increase its capacity to 20 million passengers per year by 2025.
The 4,000 square metre expansion features four new gates, nine waiting areas, modern security equipment and rooms for people with reduced mobility.
It also includes new restaurants and a duty free shop as the airport lays the groundwork for a post Covid-19 world.
Ali Al Midfa, chairman of the Sharjah Airport Authority, said the expansion would “enhance the position of the emirate of Sharjah on the global travel map".
“The project will contribute to making the aspirations of the aviation sector and sustainable development a reality on the ground," he said.
The expansion coincides with a major maintenance programme across the airport including a redesign of the entrance to arrivals, refreshing customer service counters and new lighting at the aircraft stands.
Sharjah Airport's first and business class lounges have also been upgraded.
Sharjah is the hub for Air Arabia, which has also linked up with UAE flag-carrier Etihad, to provide a low-cost airline in Abu Dhabi.
According to Sharjah airport authorities, more than 13 million passengers came through airport in 2019.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.

Tips to stay safe during hot weather
