Interchange A1, the road connecting the Abu Dhabi – Shahama highway to the new terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport, is on course to open by the end of the year.

The Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) said on Tuesday the Dh678 million project is 77 per cent complete and, when complete, will provide direct access to and from the Midfield Terminal towards Abu Dhabi as well as Dubai and Al Ain cities.

"Under the project, Abu Dhabi-Shahama Road (E10) will become broader, from four to five lanes in both directions, and the Presidential Flight road from two to three lanes in both directions," said Saleh Al Mazrouei, Musanada's acting roads and infrastructure executive director.

The project involves widening the E10 to five lanes and the road leading to the Presidential Flight building to three lanes. Four bridges will be built to serve as entry and exit points to the new terminal and another to lead traffic from Khalifa City to the E10 (towards Dubai). An underpass leading to Yas Island from E10 will be constructed.

Recently, the road from E10 leading to the Presidential Flight road has been closed, as has the road from Khalifa City leading to Dubai at Interchange Five. In the next phase, a detour will be opened on Abu Dhabi – Al Shahama road while four lanes in both directions are maintained.

“Once operational, this project will significantly help improve traffic safety levels and reduce accidents ratio,” said Faisal Al Suwaidi, director-general of the main roads division at the Department of Transport.
