RAS AL KHAIMAH // The emirate's first local bus service will begin next month after a series of delays. Plans for the service were first announced in September 2008 but delayed until January last year, when it was put back again. A scheduled launch in May this year was postponed when the RAK Transport Authority (Rakta) said it did not have enough buses. "Since the paperwork was being shuffled between departments it took some time," said Jason Farhat, Rakta's director of commercial and investment affairs. "Now the process is going very smoothly."
The one-way fare, set at Dh5 for the proposed May launch, will now be Dh7. Mr Farhat attributed the increase to higher fuel prices. A taxi from Nakheel to Sha'am, the northernmost town, on the Oman border, costs Dh40. The service will include three 14-passenger buses running every 45 minutes from the Jumbo intersection in Nakheel to Sha'am via Khor Khwair and al Rams. The second and third routes, which will begin at a later date, will follow the airport road to the Fujairah border and the coastal road to Jazirat al Hamra. As many as 12 buses will be used. "We will start as a pilot test after Eid," Mr Farhat said.
Workers have had few options since Rakta stopped share taxis from running three years ago in favour of three private taxi companies. The extra expense has been hard on low-wage workers. While the services will travel through outlying areas, there are no plans to introduce buses within RAK city. azacharias@thenational.ae

Tips for job-seekers
- Do not submit your application through the Easy Apply button on LinkedIn. Employers receive between 600 and 800 replies for each job advert on the platform. If you are the right fit for a job, connect to a relevant person in the company on LinkedIn and send them a direct message.
- Make sure you are an exact fit for the job advertised. If you are an HR manager with five years’ experience in retail and the job requires a similar candidate with five years’ experience in consumer, you should apply. But if you have no experience in HR, do not apply for the job.

Why your domicile status is important
Your UK residence status is assessed using the statutory residence test. While your residence status – ie where you live - is assessed every year, your domicile status is assessed over your lifetime.
Your domicile of origin generally comes from your parents and if your parents were not married, then it is decided by your father. Your domicile is generally the country your father considered his permanent home when you were born.
UK residents who have their permanent home ("domicile") outside the UK may not have to pay UK tax on foreign income. For example, they do not pay tax on foreign income or gains if they are less than £2,000 in the tax year and do not transfer that gain to a UK bank account.
A UK-domiciled person, however, is liable for UK tax on their worldwide income and gains when they are resident in the UK.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
- maths and science teachers are most in demand and some schools will pay up to Dh3,000 more than other teachers in recognition of their technical skills
- at the other end of the market, teachers in some Indian schools, where fees are lower and competition among applicants is intense, can be paid as low as Dh3,000 per month
- in Indian schools, it has also become common for teachers to share residential accommodation, living in a block with colleagues
