Traffic police have added an extra dimension to efforts to boost road safety in Ras Al Khaimah - by introducing a new 'floating' pedestrian crossing.
An eye-catching 3D zebra crossing has been rolled out on Sheikh Mohammed bin Salam Road to make life safer for residents and encourage motorists to ease off the gas pedal.
The new design has been devised by traffic chiefs at Ras Al Khaimah Police in partnership with the emirate's public services department.
It is hoped the multi-coloured walkway will increase visibility of pedestrians on the busy route.
“These smart crossings will increase traffic safety and will help in reducing the speed on this vital road which sees an increasing number of pedestrians crossing the road especially during the evening,” said Brigadier Ahmad Al Naqbi, director of the traffic and patrols department at RAK Police.
It has already made an impression on residents, who hope it will prompt drivers to reduce their speed.
"The crossing is colourful and will make drivers slow down before reaching it," said Mohammed Jalal, a 32-year-old Bangladeshi tailor working in a shop near the new crossing.
"But drivers who use the road every day will get used to it, I think, and will deal with it like the regular crossing that was here before."
Another pedestrian said the crossing will act like a speed bump.
“It looks like a painting on the street and it is functioning like a speed bump, but is much more beautiful,” said Saeed Khan.
“I live nearby and cross this road a lot every day. Many motorists speed after the roundabout and ignore the pedestrians crossing but this new one will make them slow down.”

Chef Nobu's advice for eating sushi

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.
