More speed radars for Dubai’s roads this year

More speed radars will be installed on Dubai’s roads this year as well as CCTV cameras in busy areas, the emirate’s police chief has announced.

“This year’s budget includes an increase in the number of security cameras installed across the streets and popular places in the emirate. There will also be an increase in the number of speed-radar devices installed in Dubai,” said Maj Gen Khamis Al Mazeina, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police.

Countering the belief that speed radars are installed simply to raise money, Maj Gen Al Mazeina said their purpose was to enhance the safety and security of road users, some of whom were harassed by speeding drivers.

“This increase in the number of speed radars is not a moneymaking exercise, but it is for safer roads through reduction in speeding and, consequently, reducing traffic fatalities. I challenge anyone who adheres to the speed limit and still gets fined by the radar. Radars have been installed to catch violators,” said Maj Gen Al Mazeina in an interview with the Ministry of Interior’s 999 magazine.

Maj Gen Al Mazeina, who was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police last November, also outlined plans to reduce the time it took officers to respond to reports of crime, not just in Dubai, but across the country.

“Our strategic plan will focus on the provision of advanced services in line with the evolving needs of the UAE’s population, in terms of the quality of service and in the way they are delivered. The plan also concentrates on exploring new technological developments as well as achieving excellence in delivering e-services,” he said.

Maintaining that technology held a special significance in police work, Maj Gen Al Mazeina said Dubai Police would unveil more smart initiatives this year in addition to those already available through its mobile app.

He added that infrastructure projects for the force this year included the opening of a new police station near Al Maktoum Airport in Jebel Ali, Al Barsha police station, as well as redevelopment of the Bur Dubai station.

Volunteers offer workers a lifeline

Community volunteers have swung into action delivering food packages and toiletries to the men.

When provisions are distributed, the men line up in long queues for packets of rice, flour, sugar, salt, pulses, milk, biscuits, shaving kits, soap and telecom cards.

Volunteers from St Mary’s Catholic Church said some workers came to the church to pray for their families and ask for assistance.

Boxes packed with essential food items were distributed to workers in the Dubai Investments Park and Ras Al Khaimah camps last week. Workers at the Sonapur camp asked for Dh1,600 towards their gas bill.

“Especially in this year of tolerance we consider ourselves privileged to be able to lend a helping hand to our needy brothers in the Actco camp," Father Lennie Connully, parish priest of St Mary’s.

Workers spoke of their helplessness, seeing children’s marriages cancelled because of lack of money going home. Others told of their misery of being unable to return home when a parent died.

“More than daily food, they are worried about not sending money home for their family,” said Kusum Dutta, a volunteer who works with the Indian consulate.

Real estate tokenisation project

Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.

The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.

Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
