Airlines are to reduce the number of flights operated from Dubai International Airport for 45 days next year as the southern runway will be closed for an upgrade.
Low-cost airline flydubai will switch some of the flights on 39 of its routes to Al Maktoum Airport in Jebel Ali, while Emirates will cancel some flights, reduce the number of flights to certain destinations and reschedule others.
The upgrade work will run from April 16 to May 30 2019.
flydubai's affected routes include Dubai to Alexandria, Delhi, Istanbul, Jeddah, Kuwait, Mumbai and Riyadh. Some of the routes will be operating from Al Maktoum only, while others may be operating from either Al Maktoum or Dubai International.
All other flights to the more than 90 destinations the airline travels to will continue to operate as normal.
“Runway enhancement programmes continue to support the long-term vision for aviation in the UAE," said flydubai’s chief executive, Ghaith Al Ghaith.
"With flydubai flights operating to select destinations from Dubai World Central [Al Maktoum], we aim to not only support this vision but to provide our passengers with as much choice as possible to travel across our network with minimum disruption.”
The runway will be resurfaced and the ground lighting will be replaced.
Dubai international's other runway will remain operational during this time, but Emirates said they will be operating a 28 per cent reduction in their operation schedule.

Dubai handled 88.2 million passengers last year.
