Police in Dubai seized hundreds of bikes in a one-week campaign on reckless riders caught flouting traffic laws.
Officers from Al Rafaa Police Station confiscated 269 bicycles and motorbikes as part of a major drive to boost road safety.
Police rolled out the initiative in partnership with Dubai Municipality in a bid to tackle a wide range of offences, from failing to wear helmets or fluorescent jackets at night to riding on the wrong side of the road.
A task force was set up by police to snare those breaking the rules of the road and potentially putting lives at risk.
"239 bicycles and 30 motorbikes were confiscated within one week," said Brig Ahmad Thani Bin Galita, director of Al Rafaa Police Station.
“Some bikers and cyclists do not wear helmets or fluorescent safety jackets at night to enable motorists to see them clearly.
"Others tie their bikes or cycles to traffic sign boards on intersections, or drive against the direction of traffic and on pavements, which poses a risk to people's lives."
