Dubai Police seized 348 heavily modified cars in February.
Brig Abdullah bin Suroor, director of Bur Dubai Police station, said engine modifications or changes to a vehicle's base or chassis are illegal in the emirate.
Those who flout the law will be fined Dh1,000 and get 12 black points on their licence. Their vehicle will also be impounded for 30 days.
He said drivers who cause accidents and deaths after modifying their cars with illegal power boosters would face stricter penalties.
“Modified cars can cause serious accidents, especially if engine modifications do not meet requirements of the vehicle,” he said.
Brig Suroor said road safety was everyone’s responsibility. He urged motorists to avoid modifying their vehicles, saying that it could lead to deadly accidents.
“Such cars give the drivers a false sense of control. They think their vehicles have enough power and speed to dangerously overtake others and to perform risky stunts.”
Dubai Police also confiscated 108 noisy motorbikes for causing disturbance to residents.
“A campaign was launched last month with the help of Dubai Police’s general traffic department to ensure road security and reduce road fatalities and injuries,” Brig Suroor said.
“Offenders should be held accountable for their reckless actions.”
