DUBAI // A crash on the Dubai-Abu Dhabi road caused major tailbacks during rush hour on Wednesday morning, leading some commuters to turn back and return home.
The small accident, which took place Abu Dhabi-bound just south of Ibn Battuta Mall, affected thousands of commuters and meant it took more than an hour to leave Dubai for the capital. Heavy traffic is believed to be the cause of the crash. Problems were ongoing to midmorning.
Dubai Police also tweeted that a lorry flipped over on Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road, near Al Houd roundabout, which leads to Sheikh Zayed Road, and this had caused a backlog in traffic too.
Col Saif Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police said: “We continue to remind motorists to abide by the road rules and the signs on the road. It is imperative that they abide by the speed limits, which are set for their safety.
“We also remind people to not rubberneck, as that would only cause more congestion and heighten the risk of yet another incident.”

Du Plessis plans his retirement
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said on Friday the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in two years' time will be his last.
Du Plessis, 34, who has led his country in two World T20 campaigns, in 2014 and 2016, is keen to play a third but will then step aside.
"The T20 World Cup in 2020 is something I'm really looking forward to. I think right now that will probably be the last tournament for me," he said in Brisbane ahead of a one-off T20 against Australia on Saturday.
