Advanced radars to catch motorists using phones or failing to wear seat belts will be activated in Abu Dhabi from January 1.
The network of radars can automatically detect drivers flouting the rules and uses cameras powered by artificial intelligence.
Motorists then will receive a text message detailing the infringement.
The system is a collaboration between Abu Dhabi Digital Authority and Abu Dhabi Police.
Known as vast – vehicular attention and safety tracker – it aims to preserve the safety of drivers, passengers and other road users.
Police have repeatedly reminded pedestrians and motorists to follow the rules of the road.
They regularly post pictures of drivers and members jaywalking or driving recklessly.
Stiff penalties are in place to deter offenders.
Anyone caught using a phone while at the wheel, for example, faces four black points and a fine of at least Dh800.
