A trader was convicted of insulting his father-in-law and another man at the Address Hotel in Downtown Dubai.
The Syrian defendant was fined Dh5,000 for issuing insults, but was acquitted on a charge of issuing death threats.
Dubai Criminal Court was told that on the evening of January 4, the 40-year-old insulted the men in front of hotel guests.
"He accused me publicly of having my wife and daughter, who is his wife, work in the sex industry under my nose," said his father-in-law, a 63-year-old Syrian businessman.
The defendant used foul language to insult the another Syrian, before allegedly threatening to kill him if he did not give up ownership of all his companies in Dubai, the court heard.
"If you don't give up the ownership of all the companies, I will kill you even if it costs me a million dollars," the defendant allegedly said, according to prosecution records.
A Sudanese hotel security guard said he spoke to the defendant's father-in-law at the scene of the incident.
"He told me that his son-in-law was a good man but sometimes loses his nerves like that," said the guard, who admitted he did not hear the man issue the insults or threat.
Police said CCTV footage showed the defendant kicking the table the two men and others were sitting on, but it was not clear what started the exchange.
The man denied charges of issuing insults and death threats when he appeared in court, but was convicted for the former.
