The British University in Dubai has launched a bachelors degree in Artificial Intelligence, the first of its kind in the country.
The programme has been developed in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and is open to both Emiratis and expatriates.
Emiratis on the course will receive scholarship from the ICT fund, while expatriates can apply for scholarships to British University in Dubai.
The ICT Fund was launched by Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in 2007 to achieve rapid development within the information and communication technology sector in UAE.
The four-year degree course will be starting at the end of September. Tuition fees for a four-year-period will be Dhs230,000. The university plans to have a cohort of 25 and Emiratis and expatriates can apply for scholarships.
“This is the right time to offer this kind of course. There is nothing humans do without an element of AI today,” said Professor Abdullah Al Shamsi, Vice Chancellor at British University in Dubai.
“British University in Dubai decided to offer a programme that’s the first of its kind in the country. Since Artificial Intelligence is expanding so much, we think this is just the start."

The curriculum will be continuously improved and upgraded. British University in Dubai said they realised there was a need for a course in AI, and started work on the programme five years ago.
“The vision of this country is to include AI in everything we do. AI will optimise and improve the way we do things.
“Whether we like it or not, the world around us is changing very fast. Young professionals will need to know AI.
Young graduates will learn how to incorporate AI into various areas and will be trained in programming as well as applications.
British University in Dubai has entered into collaborative agreements with the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow.
British University in Dubai students completing their bachelors in science in Electromechanical or industrial engineering will have the option to study at the University of Edinburgh or at the University of Glasgow in certain programmes for the last two years of their degrees.
At the University of Edinburgh students can pursue electrical, mechanical or electronics engineering. At the University of Glasgow students can choose to complete their degree in mechanical, aeronautical, electronics, electrical, mechatronics engineering or aerospace systems programmes.
In addition, both Scottish universities will offer the students financial support.
The launch of the course comes just week after the UAE announced its first ever AI summer camp in Dubai, which is being attended by more than 2,000 students.
Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, has said that he expects the rise of AI to save the UAE billions of dirhams through improved efficiency.

Other simple ideas for sushi rice dishes
Cheat’s nigiri
This is easier to make than sushi rolls. With damp hands, form the cooled rice into small tablet shapes. Place slices of fresh, raw salmon, mackerel or trout (or smoked salmon) lightly touched with wasabi, then press, wasabi side-down, onto the rice. Serve with soy sauce and pickled ginger.
