Sudden swerving causes 28 deaths on Dubai roads

Swerving by drivers has caused the deaths of 28 people on Dubai's roads this year, police say.

Of the 1,420 crashes recorded in the emirate in 2018, 342 were the result of abrupt changes in direction by motorists.

Traffic police said the bulk of crashes in the emirate were caused by "human error".

“Most deadly traffic accidents are due to human errors, driver's fault and lack of attention,” said Brig Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police.

Police said fatal accidents on Dubai's roads were predominantly caused by swerving, failing to leave a safe distance and misjudgment by drivers.

“A total of 88 deaths occurred as a result of 1,420 traffic accidents. Another 922 people were injured,” said Brig Al Mazroui.

Accidents involving heavy lorries led to 18 deaths, while motorbike accidents caused eight deaths, according to statistics.

Dubai Police are spearheading driver-awareness initiatives, including a day without accidents campaign which runs from August 1 to September 2. Drivers are urged to sign a pledge letter promising to drive carefully. Those taking part in the campaign who do not get involved in any accidents will be awarded with gifts, appreciation certificates and 50 per cent discount on traffic violations recorded against them.
