DUBAI // Successful women from the Middle East, and in particular the UAE, will be honoured on April 15 for their contributions to various fields.
They will share the limelight with Bollywood stars at the Madinat Jumeirah as Gr8! Women Awards, an initiative of the Indian Television Academy, recognises their accomplishments.
The awards ceremony will honour 18 women from the region, including nationals and expatriates from the Emirates, for their contributions to business, fashion, music, medicine, films and social work.
The Gr8! Women Awards organisation will also launch its Middle East chapter in Dubai.
Entrepreneurs Sara Belhasa and Badria al Mulla, film producer Nayla al Khaja and surgeon Dr Houriya Kazim are among the Emiratis who are being recognised, alongside Indian actresses Preity Zinta and the legendary Zeenat Aman.
"It feels great to be recognised," said Ms Belhasa, owner of the Studio 8 fashion boutique in Dubai. "I like the concept of honouring women in the region.
"It will serve as a motivation to other women. We have a lot of awards in Dubai, but this is the first of its kind.
"It is an honour for me because it is coming from India, which is fast expanding and becoming an economic powerhouse," added Ms al Mulla, an entrepreneur and one of the first female senior managers in the UAE oil and gas exploration industry.
"It is great to start thinking of women's achievements in the Middle East."
There are many successful women in the region who are "breaking the shackles", said Mrs Anu Ranjan, who founded the awards in India 10 years ago.
"The Middle East is one place where common perceptions are very different from reality. Women are doing exceptionally well. If the rest of the world should know, they should be given a platform," she said.
The awards founder said there was no distinction between nationals and expatriates in the region, as they were all contributing equally to the nation's growth.
The ceremony will also raise awareness about breast cancer, and Dr Kazim is expected to speak about the disease at the event.
Actress Mahima Chaudhry, who announced the awards this week, urged people to get mammograms for early detection of breast cancer.
The event will include performances by Bollywood stars Raveena Tandon, Vivek Oberoi, Jacqueline Fernandez and singers Madhushree and Shailendra Singh.
The Gr8! awards have previously honoured Indian actresses Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor.
Organisers plan to expand the awards throughout the Gulf, and to honour more women from the entire region.

How Islam's view of posthumous transplant surgery changed
Transplants from the deceased have been carried out in hospitals across the globe for decades, but in some countries in the Middle East, including the UAE, the practise was banned until relatively recently.
Opinion has been divided as to whether organ donations from a deceased person is permissible in Islam.
The body is viewed as sacred, during and after death, thus prohibiting cremation and tattoos.
One school of thought viewed the removal of organs after death as equally impermissible.
That view has largely changed, and among scholars and indeed many in society, to be seen as permissible to save another life.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.
For sale
A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Low turnout
Two months before the first round on April 10, the appetite of voters for the election is low.
Mathieu Gallard, account manager with Ipsos, which conducted the most recent poll, said current forecasts suggested only two-thirds were "very likely" to vote in the first round, compared with a 78 per cent turnout in the 2017 presidential elections.
"It depends on how interesting the campaign is on their main concerns," he told The National. "Just now, it's hard to say who, between Macron and the candidates of the right, would be most affected by a low turnout."
