ABU DHABI// Abu Dhabi Classics made a welcome return to the capital on Tuesday night with a sold-out opening performance by Lydie Solomon.
The Franco-Korean pianist played a stirring solo piano recital dedicated to the celebrated 19th century Polish composer, Frederic Chopin.
The event also marked the arrival of the Manarat Al Saadiyat Auditorium as a worthy venue for intimate concerts; the acoustics were crystal-clear throughout Solomon’s performance.
The 32-year-old’s programme touched on the many aspects of Chopin’s career.
She began with Nocturne in C sharp minor Op posth, No 20; it was a gentle yet stark introduction that steadily built to an ethereal middle section before reprising that haunting introductory theme.
The intensity picked up in the popular Etude Op 10 No 12 with its signature stormy introductory passages before the effervescent Bolero Op 19 arrived with its Spanish influences.
The drama was not only limited to the keys, Solomon – who has a part-time acting career – made her UAE debut in a dazzling gilded gown.
She was a quiet yet intense figure, her pauses between movements found her often peering into some far away corner of the ceiling. Her affinity with the material was genuine, particularly in her beautiful rendering of Prelude Op 28 No 4 as she delicately channelled the piece's exquisite longing.
Solomon’s performance capped a successful beginning to Abu Dhabi Classics. Returning after a three-year break, the season continues until May next year with regular performances focusing on the festival theme of The Traveler.
The next Abu Dhabi Classics concert will take place at the Abu Dhabi Theatre on October 28, with the renowned Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer. He will be supported by the Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra as they present a performance titled The Four Seasons.
This will be followed by an appearance by the Spanish viol player Jordi Savall with the world premiere of his newest programme Ibn Battuta: The Voyager of Islam at Emirates Palace on November 20.

Why are asylum seekers being housed in hotels?
The number of asylum applications in the UK has reached a new record high, driven by those illegally entering the country in small boats crossing the English Channel.
A total of 111,084 people applied for asylum in the UK in the year to June 2025, the highest number for any 12-month period since current records began in 2001.
Asylum seekers and their families can be housed in temporary accommodation while their claim is assessed.
The Home Office provides the accommodation, meaning asylum seekers cannot choose where they live.
When there is not enough housing, the Home Office can move people to hotels or large sites like former military bases.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Straightforward ways to reduce sugar in your family's diet
